‘Fire Fly Dancer’ was created from an imagined experience. The hard day’s travel was behind me so I settled by my camp fire to reflect on the day and this amazing place I had found. An aboriginal enclave surrounded by steep rocky walls and I could feel the presence and closeness of the ancients heavy in the air which evoked so many strange and mixed emotions, but I was tired and just needed rest so sat quietly and stared into the fire. The sun was casting the last of its’ warm light across a darkening sky as the moon, like a gigantic glowing orb made her appearance and began her ascent into the evening sky. My fire seemed to be taking on a life of its’ own, rising and falling in some sort of dance. One flame seemed to rise higher than most in a tumbling action and as it rose, it would glow brighter and then extinguish itself into the darkness, only to rise up again even higher and brighter than before. Was it my imagination or was I seeing a figure beginning to form from within the flames and was drawing energy from the fire. This flame and figure were one with each other in a strange fiery dance and I was completely transfixed by the dance it performed. Now the figure was almost my size as it rose higher and higher and I sat frozen to the spot. I had lost all track of time and was completely mesmerized by the wonderment of this fiery dancer. Just then a wind blew in from the east and lifted my Fire Fly Dancer high into the sky as it streamed a trail of glowing cinders behind it and finally, all disappeared into the darkness of the western sky.
This paintings thoughts and imaginings were born from lived experiences whilst travelling through areas around Innamincka, Noccundra, Tibooburra, Thargomindah and many others like them in the vast expanses of Australia's outback and also some special time spent at Laura in Northern Queensland on Australia's East Coast.
